IT WAS SOMETHING SPECIAL RIGHT FROM THE START. What else could a golf club be that was purchased in gold bullion? The conception of Interlachen Country Club began November 16, 1909, when several members of the Bryn Mawr Golf Club decided to found a new golf club. These members purchased farmland alongside a suburban Minneapolis streetcar line. The club was officially incorporated on December 31, 1909, and the original golf course designed by Willie Watson opened on July 29, 1911. The club’s first golf professional was George Sargent, who had just won the 1909 U.S. Open and later became president of the PGA of America. Some of the first activities at the club included tennis, horseback riding, and trapshooting.
